SSP: The Summer Science Program

SSP: The Summer Science Program

I am very lucky to have been one of 72 students worldwide to earn the right to participate in SSP, because it was a life-changing experience. We received daily lectures on physics, astronomy, calculus, and programming, and combined this knowledge with asteroid observations conducted on a 14" Meade refracting telescope in order to determine the orbit of a chosen asteroid.

Programming work involved extensive Python scripting and .fits file processing.

FIRST Robotics Team 3145

FIRST Robotics Team 3145

FIRST Robotics is a yearly robotics competition among high school students in which teams of students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test a sizeable (5', 120lbs) robot, then use it to compete against other teams from around the nation. After participating on a rival high school's team my sophomore year, I founded a team at my own school, and led them to winning the Rookie All Star award at our very first regional competition.

I have been a part of designing and CAD-ing parts, bringing them to life on a CNC milling machine, doing electrical wiring, programming the robot, and even writing grants and pitching our team to judges.

Team honors include the 2010 Portland Regional Rookie All Star Award, 2010 World Competition competitor, and 2011 Portland Regional Judges' Award.

Personal honors include Team MVP, junior and senior co-captain, and Dean's List Nominee.
